And with the opening of Work it, a new way to office is born!
When I sold my dog daycare and boarding business at age 39 I semi-retired and moved on to the world of consulting. I found myself always in coffee shops and meeting clients in restaurants (sometimes I would literally eat 3 meals a day at restaurants). I started to realize there was a need for a healthy, affordable office and meeting options. And the idea of flexible, affordable, office and co-working space started to churn in my mind.
Then, one day over the lunch hour I ran into my cousin at the gym. He was flailing his phone around desperately trying to get a signal to fire off an e-mail before his body pump class that started in literally 90 seconds.
I pointed him to the windows where I could always get a signal. In doing so, I realized I e-mailed and did a fair amount of work from the gym because once I got on the elliptical machine I got a lot of ideas for my clients and my own business. I started to think about the kind of work I could do if I had access to the gym and a strong wi fi connection all day. And I started to think about my cousin who would scramble back to the office at breakneck speed after his class. What if he could integrate his workouts without losing work or family time? With all the problems of a sedentary lifestyle and world emerging with alternative workplace strategy, telecommuters, free lancers, and creative professionals, there had to be more people like us.
We know that sitting at a desk all day isn’t good for your health, but it is the reality for most of us. And we know the number one reason people don’t go to the gym is they truly don’t have time (because they need to earn money for their families or whatever). And, we know that physical and mental health is connected, and connected to our overall quality of life and personal relationships. But that doesn’t always make it more motivating to work out and it doesn’t mean you will have time.
I started to re-imagine the “sedentary jobs” many of us have in front of screens all day. Think of the calorie burn, strength, cardiovascular health, and mental health if we could move as we worked? Think of the amazing work we could produce. Think of the workplace where that was generating! Think of how being that much healthier would affect our family and social lives. What an amazing force for good and wellness this could be!
And I realized how hard it was to find the time for the gym for so many people. What if that could be easier? And even people like my cousin who found a way were scrambling. They have the demands of their career and family and want to take care of their own health if nothing else, so they have something to give the other two. I thought there had to be a way to work and work out more in less time.
I just knew that a business like Work It ™ could make the world a better place by giving people an opportunity to become more physically, mentally, and emotionally healthy just by moving and being active as they worked. And at the same time allow them to really blast out their potential in their work not only because they would be at their best because of the above, but because moving and grooving gets your brain going in ways it otherwise can’t. You can be a real power house.
